TWU Members make generous contribution to local Charities

We at the TWU Local 2019 had our annual membership Christmas party on December 10th 2016, at the Winking Lizard in Lakewood, OH. We had over 80 members and spouses in attendance and were able to generate over $1500 for local charities. However with that being said I would like to take you to the beginning……

Prior to the party our local leadership began spreading the word about the Christmas party. We were looking to have a Chinese Raffle, with the proceeds going to Toys for Tots charity. In the beginning we thought we could acquire a few baskets to raffle off, but as we got members to offer to donate baskets of their own, or had members donate cash so baskets could be made by our officers. In the end we ended up with 13 baskets in total, we were taken aback with the generosity of our membership, but would there be enough left to buy the tickets?

The party began as most do, with members trickling in. They began buying tickets for the 50/50 raffle, proceeds going to the Cleveland Food Bank, and for the Baskets. It was a great time seeing the retirees, members from Collinwood, Macedonia, Cleveland, and Lorain Ohio. It turned out to be a rousing success with stories and laughs to hugs and handshakes.

Our officers were pleasantly surprised when the totals for the baskets came in….we were able to raise 1100$ for Toys for Tots, 250$ for the Cleveland Food Bank with the 50/50 money (with the winner donating half of their winnings back for the food bank). It is a wonderful thing to work, and be associated with people of this caliber.

When it came time to go buy the toys, our President went to Kohl’s and bought a mountain of toys. Then came the Kohl’s cash for spending so much there he was able to get another 200$, which was used to by winter coats for another charity, Coats For Kids.

All in all it was a wonderful event. We truly showed what can happen when we work together, none of these donations would have been possible without our members, their spouses, and the retirees who attended
